Active East Lothian's Volunteer of the Month

Active East Lothian's innaugural Volunteer of the month award has been presented to Stefan McGinley of Knox Academy.

January Award

At the start of 2016, Active East Lothian has seen the formation of a service wide Volunteer of the Month award, to help praise and reward our amazing volunteers! Nominations are taken from across all of Sports Development, Active Schools and our Community Recreation team, all of which could not survive without these precious volunteers.

The Innaugural award was won by the amazing Stefan McGinlay, who is a behaviour support worker at Knox Academy. Stefan has set up a hugely successful Self-Defence after school club, which has grown rapidly and is now regarded as one of the biggest clubs within Knox Academy. With around 20 participants every week, Stefan has managed to motivate and engage with a wide range of individuals and with his 8 years British Combat Association experience truly has succeeded. Over 50% of the regular participants are girls who began the class struggling in confidence and fitness levels. These girls have now grown into very fit, technically proficient and are increasingly confident in themselves and in leading others.

Mr Steven Wands, Knox Academy’s Active Schools Coordinator said “I hope and believe that this self-defence club will continue to grow within the school and potentially, further afield. The fitness, street awareness and self-confidence that pupils have developed through involvement in this club will see them well, no matter what they go on to do following school.”

Stefan has shown himself to be a vastly valuble asset to Knox Academy by delivering over and above what is expected of him, and turley deserves January’s Volunteer of the Month award! Other nominees for the award are listed below!

Clair Duncan, Euan Munro, Nick Stewart - Tranent Active Schools

Chey Carrigan - Ross High School

Mikaela Osborne - Preston Lodge HS

Chloe Duffy, Rebecca Ainslie - Knox Academy

Louise Arnold - Kings Meadow Primary
