Cameron wins AAA title

Team East Lothian's Cameron Steven wins AAA 800m title

Cameron Steven AAA Champion

On the back of his winning performance and championship best performance last weekend at the Scottish Under-17 Championships over the 1500m, Cameron Steven (Lasswade/Team East Lothian) went down to Bedford, England to contest the AAA title over his preferred distance of 800m.

Taking on the best in Britain, Cameron had a very convincing win in his heat on the Saturday to successfully claim a berth on Sunday’s final. Going into the final Cameron was the favourite to take the englandathletics AAA’s title, but with torrential rain and a tightly packed field it was going to be a challenging race for the young Dunbar Grammar pupil.

In the final Cameron stamped his dominance on the race taking the lead from gun to tape, successfully fending off any challenges over the closing stages of the race Cameron had a few metres lead in the final 150metres of the race and then unleashed a strong finishing kick to run away with the title. It was a fine win for the Team East Lothian and Performance Athletes in School (PAiS) athlete, winning in unfavourable conditions just outside his own personal best with a time of 1:52.98.

Cameron will head down to the UK School Games [Friday 04 September] to represent Scotland over the 800m and 4x400m relay, with his Team East Lothian teammates Maria Lyle in the para-events 100m and Kate Johnstone also representing Scotland over the 4x100m relay.
