East Lothian Open breaks records

Over 500 players, 1,000 matches made this year’s tournament one to remember

East Lothian Open 2014

A record breaking entry of more than 500 players competing in more than 1,000 matches during one of the best spells of weather combined to make the 2014 East Lothian Tennis Open one of the best ever.

In the men’s singles Charlie Turney (Ealing), seeded 3 won in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 against Michael Seed whilst Hannah Sharp (Blackhall) enjoyed her first visit to the tournament with a win in the women’s singles final against Heather Croll. As well as reaching the singles final Heather also took the U16 singles and U18 doubles titles to round off a fantastic personal tournament for her. Philip Blythe confirmed his dominance of the boys’ junior sections with wins in both the U16 and U18 singles events.

There was local success in the men’s over 55 singles and over 45 doubles with John Reid (North Berwick) claiming victory in both, the latter with Gary Melville (St Serf’s). Trudi Redi (North Berwick) won the over 40s doubles partnered by Jaye Martin (Western) and North Berwick club coach, Adele Fletcher defeated Toni Lemmon in the over 40s singles event. Norma Reid (North Berwick) won the mixed doubles handicap with Michael Russell (Dunfermline).

Other highlights included a brilliant run from the duo of Lloyd Greatorex-Watson and Oliver Darbyshire (Braid) to reach their first men’s doubles open final against the reigning champions, Richard Jones and Charlie Turney. The Braid lads emerged victorious with a thrilling Championship tiebreak victory on Court 1 in front of a capacity crowd to finish the tournament in style.

Cabinet member for community wellbeing, Cllr Tim Day said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed attending this year’s event and have heard many favourable comments about the organisation of the tournament and the high standard of play displayed. I also had the honour of presenting some of the trophies alongside Mrs Ella Vlandy, a former Scottish hockey internationalist, who has recently celebrated her 100th birthday and is testament to the benefits of an active lifestyle.”

“I would also like to thank the competitors, spectators and volunteers for their huge contributions to the week and making the 2014 tournament one of the best ever.”

New events introduced this year - ‘parent and child’, ‘Legends’ doubles and over 55s singles were well received and will reappear for the 2015 tournament.
