East Lothian Primary Schools P6 teams compete for place at National Kwik Cricket Finals Day

Kwik Cricket Festival Primary 2016

On a sunny afternoon at Meadowmill Sports Centre, aka Tranent Cricket Oval, four East Lothian Primary Schools competed for the East Lothian Kwik Cricket Trophy. This year's event turned out to be the closest competition in the history of the East Lothian Kwik Cricket Tournament.

Dunbar PS, Gullane PS, Macmerry PS and Yester PS all had extra coaching sessions with Cricket Development Officer Nic Wilson in preparation for the tournament and it showed on the day! Volunteer coaches Stephen Dixon (Preston Village CC) and Wullie Weatherhead (Tranent CC and East Lothian County CC) who kindly umpired and scored the matches, were very impressed with the skill level of the mostly new cricketers.

After the first two rounds Dunbar PS and Gullane PS were unbeaten. The match between the two schools would be the decider and after a hard-fought contest the match ended up in a tie (=draw)! This happens very rarely in cricket and a countback of runs scored in the other matches was needed wihich was closely won by Dunbar PS.

Dunbar PS received the trophy, an antique cricket bat and also qualified for the National Primary Kwik Cricket Finals Day hosted by Cricket Scotland at Doo'cot Park in Perth.

All teams should be congratulated on their performances at Meadowmill. The tournament was played in great spirit and all players did themselves and their schools proud!
