Kate wins in Netherlands

It was a fantastic win for Team East Lothian's Kate Johnstone on her international debut at the International Children's Games held in Alkmaar. Representing Scotland as part of the team selected from the City of Edinburgh local authority, Kate had a fantastic set of results whilst competing in the Dutch town of Alkmaar.

Competing in the 100m, Kate equaled her recent personal best of 12.53s (+0.7m/s) in the preliminary qualification rounds, setting the fastest qualifying time. Later that day, Kate returned for the quarterfinals, winning her heat and again equaling her personal best of 12.53 (+1.3m/s).

Still on winning form in the semi finals, Kate claimed a first place but with a wind assisted time of 12.42s (+2.9m/s). Sunday’s final looked set to be very competitive with Kate facing stiff competition from the American athlete from Oakland who set a wind assisted best of 12.28s in the other semi final. In the final the Team East Lothian athlete held her nerve and Kate clinched the gold medal ahead of fellow Brit and Coventry athlete and American rival, setting a new personal best of 12.43s (-0.1m/s).

The International Children's Games is a sports event for young people which has developed into an event of global stature which has been accredited by the International Olympic Committee.
