Kings Meadow End Prestonpans Winning Streak

Regional P7 tag rugby tournament held at Meadowmill won by Kings Meadow Primary

EL Reg Tag tournament

The annual P7 Regional Tag Rugby Tournament was held at Meadowmill on Wednesday 13th May. Twelve teams entered the tournament including the winners of the past four tournaments, Prestonpans Primary. The tournament included a round robin phase of 2 groups, with the winners and runners up of each group progressing to the semi finals.

The quality of rugby on display was of a high standard with players displaying the various skills they have learned through exposure to tag rugby sessions at their schools. Tag rugby helps develop generic rugby skills such as catching and passing as well as spacial awareness and anticipation. These skills are transferable to many different sports and not limited to only rugby. Although the games were very competitive in a tournament structure, there was a big emphasis on ‘fair play’ player conduct. Teams were encouraged to support and encourage their team mates, react positively to losing by congratulating the opposition and thank the referee after each game. The ‘Fair Play’ trophy was also awarded to the team who are scored highest on these ‘Fair Play’ traits.

On the day, Gullane Primary and Aberlady Primary progressed to the semi-final from group A, with Gullane finishing top. In group B, Prestonpans Primary progressed as winners with Kings Meadow Primary going through as runners up. In the two nail biting semi-finals, it was Prestonpans Primary who edged out Aberlady Primary and Kings Meadow Primary who managed to beat Gullane Primary to progress to the final. Having beaten Kings Meadow in the group stages, Prestonpans Primary were favourites to win their 5th consecutive title. Kings Meadow had other ideas and managed to score a dramatic win with a try in sudden death after the match had finished 3-3 after full time. Although Dirleton Primary battled to win any games, they won the ‘Fair Play’ trophy for their great sporting conduct throughout the tournament.

On the whole it was a great morning and hopefully enjoyed by all who attended. The good weather also helped make the day a great success. Thanks must go to schools and their teachers and helpers for supporting the event. Musselburgh Burgh, Prestonpans, MacMerry, St Martins, Windygoul, Kings Meadow, Gullane, Aberlady and Dirleton all attended on the day. We look forward to hosting them and other schools at next year’s event. Thanks also to Edinburgh Rugby for helping us out on the day.
