Lois crowned Champion.

Lois Turnbull has been flying high throughout this year having captured 8 girls’ singles titles around Scotland and the icing on the cake came at the recent Scottish Primary Championships in Perth when she retained her title to become Scottish Primary champion for the second time.

Being seeded number one carries its own pressure and expectations however Lois calmly eased through all her pool matches to take her place in the main draw where she continued to do likewise until the semi-final stage when Brooke Stalker Fife’s top girl pushed her hard and took 15 points from her. In the final Lois and Mary Kong, from Edinburgh who partner each other in the U12 events, took to the court and battle they did with Lois coming out on top 21/19 to take the Championship Title and Trophy.

Young Kate Thomson, Dunbar Primary school, experiencing her first big event was unlucky in the ‘B’ Singles to lose out 21/19 to Glasgow’s Iona Campbell who went on to win the final.

Meanwhile our East Lothian boys were striving to find their best form against the rest of Scotland and some of them did. Finlay Jack Primary 6 from Law reached the quarter-final of the Boys’ Singles only losing a creditable 21/16 to the No. 2 seed while fellow classmates Harry Bent and Ben Riddell playing extremely well took all challengers in their stride to reach the boys singles final. Energy levels were dropping and legs were struggling as they battled, at the end of the day against strong top seeds Grant Lewis and Finlay Sheriff from Dunblane who ran out winners 21/11.

Although both boys were disappointed it was a great achievement for an U10 and U11 to win silver medals at the National Primary Championships.

Thanks must go to coach Irene Blair and all the parents who supported the children throughout all their matches.
