Maria Lyle Wins Double Bronze

Maria Lyle repersents Great Britain in the World Para Athletics Championships 2017 in London

Maria Lyle World Para Championships 2017

On 14th-23rd July 2017 London hosted the World Para Athletics Championships in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The Championships hosted roughly 1,300 athletes from 100 countries joining together to compete over the 10days.

Four Scots were amoung the athletes selected to repersent Great Britain in the championships, Jo Butterfield, Stef Reid, Sammi Kinghom and our very own East Lothian athlete Maria Lyle.

After a not so ideal start picking up an injury in the holding camp a couple weeks before the championships, Maira first took to the track in the 200m on Sunday 16th July winning the Bronze medal in a season's best time of 29.87seconds. Next Maria was up in the 100m on Wednesday 19th, Maria had a strong start, keeping her form to storm across the line to win her second Bronze medal of the championships in a time of 14.45seconds.

Two great perfromances from Maria considering when in an interview with scottish athletics after her 200m Maria said herself ‘It was only this week that I was able to run again, last week I couldn’t run at all, I could hardly walk. So it’s been a really good turn-around as I was preparing myself not to be able to run. I managed to finish both races and get a medal and I couldn’t ask for more.’

The Great Britain team had a great performance overall finishing 3rd on the medals table with 18 Gold 8 Sliver and 13 Bronze a total of 39medals.

Congratulations Maria on a very successful World Para Championships!
