Regional P7 Tag Tournament a Big Success

New Regional P7 Tag Rugby Tournament format a big success

Regional P7 Tag tournament

Over 350 primary pupils from 15 primary schools around East Lothian descended on Meadowmill for the annual P7 Tag Rugby Tournament on Wednesday 14th September. It was the first time the event included separate girls and boys events and judging by the number of teams entered into the two tournaments, the change has been a big success. There were 18 girls’ teams and 22 boys’ teams with both the boys and girls events running as 7-a-side tournaments. For the girls’ tournament, Windygoul from Tranent and Kings Meadow Primary made it through to the final. In a closely contested final, Kings Meadow ran out as eventual winners. In the boys’ tournament, there were two very closely contested semi finals where Dunbar sneaked through against Musselburgh Burgh and Yester Yester Primary managed to beat Kings Meadow Primary in an extra time sudden death. Dunbar Primary ran out winners in the final to follow up their victory in last years’ combined event.

On the whole it was a great morning with many children getting an opportunity to play rugby which bodes well for the future of the game in the region. There are definitely some stars in the making with lots of talent on show. A big part of the tournament is promoting ‘Fair Play’ which includes respect for referees and opposition as well as your own team. There was a high level of good sportsmanship and team spirit on display which was very encouraging to see. The winners of the ‘Fair Play’ trophies on the day were Yester Primary in the girls’ tournament and Windygoul Primary in the boys tournament. All the children were a credit to their schools and communities and we look forward to having everyone back next year for the annual event.
