Basia wins University Title

Basia Grodynska from Longniddry celebrated winning her first Scottish women’s singles title at the Scottish University Badminton Championships held recently at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

The atmosphere throughout the Championships was terrific with over a hundred players from around the world representing different Universities and cheering on their fellow players.

Basia a first-year student at Queen Margaret’s University studying Human Biology was thrilled when she was informed this was the first medal that Musselburgh university had won in the history of the Student Badminton Championships,

As one of the seeded players in the women’s singles Basia confirmed the draw had been kind to her and managed two straight set wins over opponents from University of West of Scotland and Edinburgh University before encountering another seeded player Cara McCulloch of Stirling on whom she managed to beat in straight games 21-7 21-5.

At the semi-final stage, she was up against number one seed Emma Cook and the winner for the past two years. After some initial nerves and finding her rhythm she won a difficult match that was harder than the score suggested in 21-8, 21-12.

In the final, she was up against second seed and former Commonwealth Games player Rebekka Findlay from West of Scotland University who she beat in two straight games 21-14, 21-17 to win her first Universities title. This was a moment she was very proud of representing her university and successfully winning her first title.
