Last week, Dunbar Swimming Club received a visit from ex East Lothian swimmer and Commonwealth Games finalist Mark Tully.

Mark, a former member of Tranent Amateur Swimming Club and East Lothian Swim Team left the sport after finishing 4th in the 50m Breaststroke at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Mark had trained for a number of years with Tranent, East Lothian and Edinburgh University and felt the time was right to hang up his googles.

Dunbar Swimming club were looking at inviting a couple of athletes down to the club to do some demonstrations and talk to the children about their experiences. Mark is well known in the county and was keen to come along and help the younger swimmers.

Mark stayed for all three club sessions and spoke about his swimming experiences. The children were very keen to hear about his time as a swimmers and asked many questions!

Mark then stayed poolside and worked with the coaches, providing feedback to the swimmers and helping to coach. As Mark was known for his breaststroke, the coaches designed the session around that stroke, allowing Mark to provide plenty of feedback to both swimmers and coaches.

Towards the end of the session, Mark demonstrated breaststroke and raced a few of the children!

Nicola Maxwell (chairperson at Dunbar Swimming Club) commented “Mark was a great sport and got in the pool to give the kids a demonstration before treating them to a few races! The kids were really inspired by him and absolutely loved the whole experience.”
