Recognition for local Gymnastics at Awards evenings

The East Lothian Celebrating Sport Awards and the Scottish Gymnastics Awards have recognised a number of local coaches, gymnasts and volunteers

A number of local gymnasts, coaches and volunteers have recently be recognised for their hard work and continued success at the East Lothian Celebrating Sport Awards. The evening, held at The Brunton Theatre on Friday 26th October, celebrates the local sporting achievements of East Lothian over the last two years.

With a number of a categories, there were a number of nominations to be considered by the selections panel and we were pleased to see members from the gymnastics community shortlisted in 11 categories.

Nominated for Coach of the Year were Tracey Brown from Saltire Team Gymnastics and Lauren Jeffrey from City of Edinburgh Trampoline Club. Both have been busy over the last two years working as Head Coach for their respective clubs as well as being involved in in Scotland and GB squads, where they coaches gymnasts from across the country in preparation for international competition.

City of Edinburgh Trampoline Club were also nominated for Club of the Year, which they unfortunately missed out on in a very highly contested category.

Doug Lonie

Doug Lonie from Saltire Team Gymnastics was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award for his work in securing, developing and building the clubs new facility at Meadowmill. Doug has dedicated a huge amount of time and effort to seeing the project come to fruition and in turn driving the club forwards.

Margaret Kerr

Receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award was Margaret Kerr, also from Saltire Team Gymnastics. Margaret has been involved in gymnastics for over 30 years and has been the driving force behind the development of her clubs as well as gymnastics in Scotland.

Only a few weeks later, the Scottish Gymnastics Awards evening looked to celebrate the successes of its members from across the country.

The ceremony held at the Apex Hotel on the Grassmarket, Edinburgh on Saturday 10th November, saw clubs, gymnasts and coaches from across Scotland come together to celebrate the successes of the last year.

Tracey Brown

Tracey Brown and Lauren Jeffery were once again nominated in the Coach of the Year category, with Lauren being successful in receiving the award. On receiving her award Lauren, spoke more about her role as coach for GB and how she would leaving for St Petersburg Russian in the following days to coach at the World Age Group Championships.

City of Edinburgh Trampoline Club were nominated for Club of the Year once again, however unfortunately missed out again to Fyrish Gymnastics Club who have recently opened the first dedicated gymnastics facility in the Highlands.

Catriona Morton

Catriona Morton, Gymnastics Development Officer for enjoyleisure and former committee member at Saltire Team Gymnastics was nominated for Official of the Year. Alongside her day job at enjoyleisure, Catriona also volunteers for Scottish Gymnastics in a number of roles including Team Manager for Scotland traveling delegations and Competition Organiser for Teamgym.

Doug Lonie

Doug Lonie was once again nominated for and the winner of Volunteer of the Year. Doug’s hard work for his club shone through to the awards panel once again, and Saltire were very pleased that Doug had been recognised yet again.

Lauren and Kayleigh Jeffrey

The final local award, went to Caitlin O’Brien who received a Special Recognition award for her international success in DMT. Caitlin has progressed greatly over the last few years and after becoming World Champion in the 17-20 years category, she was then selected to represent GB at the senior DMT World Championships in Russia. Caitlin was competing in Russia at the time of the awards evening, so Lauren and Kayleigh Jeffrey from the club collected the award on her behalf.

Congratulations to all nominees and winners. It is fantastic to see so many local clubs and members being recognised for all their hard work.
