    Sporting Memories

At Sporting Memories clubs, older adults come together to talk about and remember all things sport. The core of our work delivers reminiscence, social and inclusive physical activities that improve the mental and physical well-being of isolated older people (50+) living with dementia, depression, and other long-term conditions.

They do this through tapping into people’s passion, knowledge and love of sport and supporting local people to facilitate inclusive Sporting Memories weekly activities both in-person and online designed to engage all older people regardless of physical or cognitive conditions.

Please watch this film to get a flavour of what goes on at a typical Sporting Memories club.

They currently run three Sporting Memories community clubs in East Lothian - Longniddry, Musselburgh, and Dunbar - and anyone with an interest in talking about sport or looking for a bit of company is welcome to come along as a member or even a volunteer! They would love to grow our network of community clubs across the region and welcome conversations with local organisations, clubs, and charities to discuss opportunities that will enable us to enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of older people in East Lothian.

If you would like to chat about Sporting Memories, they'd love to hear from you. Please drop an email to Graham Cross - graham@thesmf.co.uk or call 07983 152566.

Sportscotland Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering (COV) Awards

COV Awards are back for 2022!

Sportscotland are looking forward to celebrating incredible coaches, officials and volunteers who are making a difference to sport in Scotland. If you know someone who's made a positive impact on their sport, club, school or community in one of these roles, the COV Awards are a chance to recognise their invaluable contribution.

This has been a busy year for coaches, officials, and volunteers, as restrictions have eased and sport has returned. It has been amazing to see how everyone involved has adapted and risen to this challenge, working to make sport inclusive and welcoming for all participants.

Nominating in the COV Awards is an opportunity to recognise and thank your coaches, officials, or volunteers, as well as raise the profile of your sport, club, school or organisation. All nominees will be contacted to thank them for their hard work and contribution. The winners will be further recognised and celebrated at an awards ceremony in October, and profiled in short films and articles shared across sportscotland channels.

There are a couple of new categories this year, as well simplifying the nomination process 😊.

Nominations close on Wednesday 13 July 2022.

    Inclusive Club Resource E-Learning Module

Introducing the Inclusive Club Resource E-Learning Module developed by Scottish Disability Sport, aimed at mainstream clubs and activity providers to further their knowledge of creating an inclusive club culture for participants with disabilities.

The purpose of this resource is to support inclusive practice by providing your club with information, tools and resources to offer opportunities to members with disabilities. The resource by no means provides all solutions to challenges you may face, but will give you the confidence and competence to begin to reach out to and welcome members with disabilities to your club and will open the door to further bespoke support for your club.

The module covers the following 9 units:

    • Introduction and Overview
    • Understanding Inclusive Sport and Physical Activity
    • Understanding Inclusive Clubs
    • Developing an Inclusive Culture
    • Effective Communication
    • Education and Learning
    • Partnerships
    • Pathways & Competition
