East Lothian Annual Gymnastics Competition

Congratulations to the gymnasts from across East Lothian who took part!

East Lothian Gymnastics Competition

A total of 221 budding gymnasts from across East Lothian participated in the Annual East Lothian Gymnastics Competition at Meadowmill Sports Centre on Sunday 28th June. Now in its 4th year, the event is split into 2 sections, one for the gymnasts in centre and school based recreational gymnasts and the other for gymnasts in one of the 3 local clubs.

Watched by enthusiastic friends, family and supporters; the day started with some of the youngest participants on the day.  In the Pre-level 1 section of the Recreational Competition we had gymnasts in the Nursery and Primary 1 age group as well as the Primary 1 – 3 Level 1 Recreational Competition and 8 years Beginners in the Club Competition.  After a quick practice, the gymnasts were judged performing their individual floor routines and on the vault.  The award ceremony immediately followed the competition with participation certificates awarded to everyone and medals for the top scorers on floor, vault and over all at each age group.

The next section of the Recreational Competition saw gymnasts compete against each other in the Primary 2/3 Pre-Level 1 and Primary 4-6 Level 1 categories alongside the 9years and 10/11years Beginners in the Club Competition. The gymnasts showed great finesse, control and skill while performing their routines on the floor.  Certificates, ribbons and medals were awarded to these gymnasts at the end of the section.

In the final section of the day the level of performance increased with the Level 2 Recreational Competition and Intermediate Club Competition as well as the 6/7years and 12years+ Beginners in the Club Competition.  While the final scores were calculated, the gymnasts and audience were treated to a spectacular display of gymnastics from Dunbar Primary School pupil (P5) and gymnast at Lasswade Gymnastics Club; Kirsty Buchanan.

Kirsty started out her gymnastics career at the age of 7 at the Bleachingfield Centre, Dunbar.  Showing great potential at a young age, she joined Lasswade Gymnastics Club and now trains 25 hours per week and is part of the Scottish Gymnastics National Performance Programme and will be joining some of Scotland’s best gymnasts at a training camp in Dundee over the Summer.

Event organiser and East Lothian Gymnastics Development Officer, Tracey Brown commented:  “The event was a fantastic showcase of the gymnastics talent in the recreational programmes and clubs in East Lothian.  For a lot of participants, this was the first time taking part in such an event where their gymnastics skills were being judged. This year’s competition had a lot more participants than last year and the level of gymnastics on show has increased greatly!  The performance of each individual is a testament to the hard work of the coaches and the progress the gymnasts have made throughout the term.”
