Five titles for East Lothian Youngsters

Five titles for east Lothian youngsters

East Lothian young badminton players Lois Turnbull and Ben Riddle were in top form and flying high against the most challenging opposition at the recent U11 & U13 Glasgow School of Sports Championships held recently at Bellahouston Academy.

Lois Turnbull from North Berwick lifted all three titles in the U13 age group in girls’ singles; doubles with Edinburgh’s Mary Kong and mixed with Hamish McCallister from Edinburgh.

In the girls singles final top seed Lois Turnbull was up against second seed Brooke Stalker from Dunfermline, and after a very tight 2 set match Lois won her first title 21/18 21/19.

Lois won her second title in the girls’ doubles with Mary Kong from Edinburgh after hard fought three set match 14/21 21/14 21/13 against Brooke Stalker and Keryn Swan.

In her third final of the day in the mixed doubles with partner Hamish McCallister they continued their winning streak to win the final in a close three set match to lift the trophy against Anthony McGuire and Keryn Swan.

In the U11 age group East Lothian player Ben Riddle had an excellent tournament winning through his pool matches to reach the boys singles final of the knock out stage, where he fought hard to win a thrilling three set final 15/10 11/15 17/15 against Karan Shah and take his first title of the day. Cameron Lee also reached the ‘B’ final against Joe Eason to win a gold medal.

In the boys doubles Ben Riddle teamed up with Daniel Kemp to comfortably win his second title in two sets 15/12 15/9 against Joe McLaughlin and Joseph O’Neil Ferrero.
