Knox Academy Link with Rwandan School

Knox Academy Pupils and Teachers support Rwandan School with equipment and funds to provide additional opportunities in sporting and cultural activities.

Knox Academy Link with Rwandan School

The Rwanda trip happened as a result of the partnership between Knox Academy and the Ruhanga School. Claire Slowther (now depute head at Dunbar) and Julia Waters (currently on secondment at Moray House) visited the Ruhanga school in May 2012 as part of the Knox partnership. They were both so moved by the experience that they decided that they would like to go back and raise funds and resources for the school. A number of teachers from the school travelled during the October school holidays to deliver 2000 pencil cases, one for every child in the school and also many other classroom resources including a variety of stationery and sports equipment. Many of these resources had been collected from staff and pupils at Knox Academy and Dunbar Grammar School.

In addition, a fund has been set up to help the school purchase sports and cultural equipment. From this fund the volleyball team and both the primary and secondary football teams have been given full team uniforms. They were also able to purchase footballs and volleyballs. Moreover, the school's cultural group of singers and dancers were also provided with uniforms and cultural equipment to use in their performances.

There is a separate fund which is being used to allow children (with one or both parents deceased) who would otherwise not be able to afford to continue their education after S3 (at which point fees must be paid) to stay on at school. This will be an on-going fund but this year alone we 32 pupils have been supported so that they can continue into S4 in the new session.
