Silverware awarded to East Lothian’s top athletes

First annual awards night for Team East Lothian AC celebrates World Records, international vests, national medals and county champions.

Over 140 parents and athletes supported the first Team East Lothian athletics club awards evening, celebrating the club’s achievements over the last eighteen months. Since being awarded sportscotland direct club investment, Team East Lothian has developed into a centre of excellence for athletics in East Lothian. The growth and development of the club has been thanks to the hard work and support of the club’s coaches and parent volunteers as well as all the efforts of the athletes on the track and field and the cross country circuit.

Maria Lyle Honorary Life Member

Club chair, Graham McPheat, remarked that 2015 has been a outstanding year for Team East Lothian and indeed athletics in East Lothian. Club athletes won a total of 15 Scottish national medals with the efforts of Cameron Steven, Pat Swan, Kate Johnstone, Callum Poole, Elizabeth Musgrove and Owen Ashall. At the UK level, Jamie Bowie picked up a 400m bronze at UK Indoor Championships and Cameron Steven a fine gold at the U17 outdoor equivalent. Kate Johnstone and Cameron Steven went on to pick up their first international vests for Scotland at the British Schools International and Celtic Games. At the senior level there was GB&NI vests for Jamie Bowie at the European Indoor Championships and for Maria Lyle at the IPC World Championships, with Lyle returning from Doha with three medals and a world record! 

 

Guest of honour and Team East Lothian club member Maria Lyle, presented the medals from this year’s East Lothian Track & Field championships which were held over four events during the summer season. The series which attracted over 500 athletes and close to 1000 entries was a huge success for the club and the East Lothian Athletics Development Group. The medals for the championships were awarded thanks to support from the Scotmid Cooperative Community Grant, for all age-groups from the primary school Run-Jump-Throw mini competition to the U11, U13, U15 and open age groups.

After presenting medals to her club mates and sharing some of her experiences fresh from the IPC World Championships in Doha, Maria was presented with honorary life membership to Team East Lothian. Lyle was awarded the club’s very first honorary membership in recognition of her outstanding achievements on the track, most notably at the European IPC Championships and the World IPC Championships.

 

Eve Coaches Cup

Four new trophies were presented to club athletes on the night for athletic endeavour, and were awarded for effort and commitment to training as well as performances at competitions. Graeme Chandler presented the Scottish Building Society Trophies for young male and young female athletes with Grace Brennan picking up the trophy for young female and Callum Poole for young male from the Potentials Squad.

Councillor Tim Day presented the enjoyleisure Cup for Athletic Endeavour for junior females, with Tarryn Wood from the development squad picking up the honours in that category. In the male equivalent Gary Scougall presented the Eve Coaches Cup which was awarded to Joe Donnelly.     

Athletics Development Officer, Jamie Bowie presented two discretionary awards for most impressive progression and personal bests. These were awarded to Charlie Hamilton (sprint hurdles) and Rose Gally (300m & 800m).

 

The pinnacle of the evening was the presentation of the East Lothian Young Athlete of the Year awards, presented on behalf of the East Lothian Athletics Development Group. Cameron Steven was awarded the male trophy for his progression over the 800m and 1500m as well as his medal winning performances at Under-17 level at Scottish age group championships, Celtic Games, British Schools Championships and the British AAA U17 Championships. Kate Johnstone was awarded the female trophy for an equally impressive track record in the last 12months with medals at the Scottish Schools and Scottish U17 Championships as well as international vests for Scotland and her very impressive win at the International Children’s’ Games in the 100m.
