Success At The East Lothian Games

To celebrate the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, funding was awarded to East Lothian to hold a ge festival of sport on the weekend of 21 and 22 June.  The East Lothian Community Sport Hub Games 2014 hosted 13 sports over the weekend across the authority.  Hundreds of people took part from youth to adults.

Hockey was a massive success on the Sunday.  The day started at 9am with the U10 and U12 Junior Hockey Tournament taking place.  Fourteen teems participated throughout the morning.  Meadowmill, Dunbar, Gullane and Haddington junior hockey clubs battling for the trophies.

It is the second year that the U12 tournament was held and Dunbar JHC were the defending champions.  It was a close fought battle between all the teams but the Dunbar Strikers were a strong team and they took the title home again for the second consecutive year.  Meadowmill JHC were a very close second place.

Due to the huge success of the U10 East Lothian Development Squad and the popularity of this age section in the East Lothian junior clubs, Fiona Harfield, Hockey Development Officer, decided to run an U10 tournament too.  Six teams entered and it was a very close tournament. However Dunbar JHC managed to take first and second place with the Strikers and the Dynamos.

In the afternoon the adult teams took over.  Every club entered at least one mixed team. The teams were made up of current club members and those who had come out of retirement!

It was exciting to see so many people taking part and coming together as a community.  North Berwick's Fidra Lions were champions after a very close final against Gullane.

It was an extremely hot day but everyone had a great time.  There was face painting, a bouncy castle and most importantly a well attended ice cream van!

Fiona was delighted with the event and would like to thank all who participated to making it a very successful day.  Less than a year until the games return!
