North Berwick’s Lois Turnbull and Dunblane’s Grant Lewis swept the board by taking two titles each at the East Lothian Open U12 Championships held recently at Musselburgh Sports Centre.
Local player Lois Turnbull eased her way into the girls singles final where she was up against Edinburgh’s Mary Kong. Turnbull lost the first set 22/20 then fought back to win 21/14 21/13 and win her first East Lothian Open title.
Turnbull’s second title came in the girl’s doubles when she teamed up with Kong beating Katie Taylor from Dunbar and Edinburgh’s Vibha Raman in the final stages.
In the Boys Singles North Berwick’s Ben Riddle reached the semi final stage where he lost out to top seed Grant Lewis while Angus Meldrum from Irvine battled hard to topple second seed Logan Ireland 21/12,19/21 21/8.
In the final Meldrum fought hard for every point but with Lewis’s consistency and variation of shots throughout the match this gave him the edge to win the boys singles title 21/18 21/18.
Lewis teamed up with regular partner Finlay Sheriff from Dunblane to win his second tile in Boy’s Doubles against Irvine duo Leo McMillan and Angus Meldrum who had a tough three set match in the semi final against Harry Bent and Finlay Jack from North Berwick.
East Lothian Badminton Development Officer and Tournament Referee Christine Black would like to thank Enjoy Leisure, volunteers and parents for all their support and in particular the players where many games were keenly contested throughout a very successful day.
