Eskmuthe Crews Fly the Flag at Global Coastal Rowing Championships

Rowers from Musselburgh are proudly representing the town on the world stage as they take part in SkiffieWorlds 2025

The SkiffieWorlds 2025 is an international coastal rowing championships being held in Stranraer. Among the 79 clubs from around the globe taking part are members of Eskmuthe Rowing Club, who have travelled from Fisherrow Harbour with Steedie Falconer, a traditional St Ayles skiff and over 40 enthusiastic club members and supporters.

The week-long event, running from 7 to 12 July, is a celebration of community boat-building and coastal rowing, with a packed race schedule on Loch Ryan. The competition attracts clubs from as far afield as the Netherlands, Ireland, Australia and the United States, as well as a strong Scottish contingent – including several other East Lothian clubs.

Eskmuthe’s presence at its third world championships is a significant achievement for the volunteer-led club, which has grown steadily in recent years through a combination of community outreach, youth engagement and success in local regattas.

The club's chair, Simon Francis, praised the commitment of volunteers and rowers:
"It’s an incredible honour to be here, racing alongside crews from all over the world. The buzz around the event is amazing, and it’s been made possible thanks to the dedication of our rowers and the incredible support from the local community. We’ve had kind donations, bake sales, raffles – you name it – all helping make this dream a reality."

The club's involvement has been boosted by generous support from local businesses, family and friends, as well as funding from a wide range of public and charitable bodies to help build the boatshed and new oars.

The SkiffieWorlds format involves head-to-head coastal races with buoy turns and sprint finishes, providing a thrilling spectacle for spectators and testing the skill and stamina of the rowers. Eskmuthe are entering crews across multiple age categories demonstrating the inclusive, all-ages ethos that underpins community coastal rowing.
