National medals at Schools Cross Country

East Lothian champions battle it out for national medals at Scottish Schools Primary Cross Country

Following on from a successful runs at the East Lothian Primary Cross Country Championships, held at the scenic John Muir Country Park at the end of March, pupils from Prestonpans Primary and Law Primary went on to contest places, and eventually medals at the Scottish Primary Schools Championships. The annual national schools event, held in the grounds around Kirkcaldy High School on 23rd April, saw over 1000 P6 and P7 pupils compete.

Katie JohnsonPrestonpans Primary pupil Katie Johnson had a superb run in the Primary-6 Girls race to come out top in a field of 250 girls. Johnson, who has had an equally good season over cross country and indoor track this winter, had a winning margin of 10-seconds to be crowned Scottish Schools Primary Cross Country champion. This is in addition to her wins locally at the East Lothian Championships and the East Lothian Schools Championships in February and March.

Another East Lothian Schools champion went on to fight for medals at the national event, with Angus Wright of Law Primary School running a fine run for a silver medal in the Primary 6 Boys event. Competing in a field against 266 pupils, there was only two-second margin between gold and silver.

There were some great performances from the rest of the Law Primary School team, with Bridget Harley being pipped to the post for the bronze medal in the Primary 7 Girls race – an excellent effort by Harley in a field against 239 athletes. Grace Tremlett placed 48th in the first of the two Primary 7 fields.

Lead by Angus Wright, the North Berwick team finished 8th in the team standings of the Primary 6 Boys. The team which included runs from Oliver Stevens, who finished 57th in the first of two Primary 6 races and Jamie Murray in 75th place.

There was a rally strong team effort from the North Berwick Primary 7 Boys who finished a fantastic 5th place in the team standings. There were top 50 efforts from Fergus Williams 18th place, Callum Queen’s 28th place and Reon McSheery in 43rd place.
