Meet In Tandem East Lothian

Sharing the Joy of Cycling!

Based in Musselburgh, In-Tandem East Lothian is opening up the world of two-wheeled adventure to adults who might otherwise miss out. As an inclusive tandem cycling club and registered charity, we’re dedicated to making the fun, freedom, and wellbeing benefits of cycling accessible to people living with a disability. Affiliated with Cycling UK, we’ve grown into a warm, welcoming community built on the belief that everyone deserves the chance to feel the wind in their face and enjoy the outdoors. National evidence reinforces what we see every week: disabled people in Scotland face major barriers to being active. Tandem cycling offers a practical, sociable solution — two riders working together, sharing effort, and building confidence side by side.

As members, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative this can be. One of our riders put it beautifully: joining ITEL helped them regain a much-loved outdoor activity after sight loss and connect with new friends. To support everyone who rides with us, we have a fleet of tandems, including an e-tandem, and our trained pilots riding up front, support our stokers (those living with a disability) to ride at the rear. Twice a month, we set off together from Queen Margaret University for routes tailored to different abilities, keeping to cycle tracks and paths as much as possible — usually with a café stop for a chat over tea, coffee, and cake. Adults aged 18 and over are always welcome, and instead of a membership fee, we simply invite a donation. Whether you’d like to join us as a stoker or train as a pilot, we’re always delighted to welcome new faces.
