NBHS win East District Hockey Plate Final
North Berwick High School's 1st XI completed a successful run, with victory in the East District Plate Final, at Peffermill on Monday 3 February.
Their cup run got off to a strong start, with a 5-0 win over Trinity Academy in the preliminary round. They then faced Fettes College in the first round. This game was played at an incredible intensity, with both teams playing some exciting hockey. After a nail-biting game, which could have gone either way, Fettes came out on top, winning 2-1. So NBHS entered the Plate competition, where they would meet Linlithgow Academy. Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances meant that Linlithgow had to withdraw, so NBHS progressed to the Plate final where they would meet Firrhill High School.
Knowing that Firrhill were a strong team, NBHS arrived at Peffermill a little apprehensive about the challenge ahead. After a close first half, with both teams creating chances, a change of formation from NBHS resulted in two great goals from open play at the beginning of the second half. Sarah Dunlop made a great run, in front of her marker at the top of the circle, to receive a pass from the right, from Kathryn Wilson, drew the goalkeeper and passed the ball into the goal. Shortly after, Becky Trainer made an inch of space for herself in the circle, and hit an excellent reverse stick shot, which beat the Firrhill goalkeeper. However, Firrhill counter-attacked well, and caught NBHS on the break, to make it 2-1 going into the last ten minutes. With two minutes left on the clock, Firrhill were awarded a penalty corner. NBHS hearts were in mouths! Solid defending meant that NBHS were able to clear the ball out of danger, as the final whistle blew, and were crowned East District Plate winners!
Thank you to all the parents, friends and staff, who came along to Peffermill to support the girls.
