Paralympic Athletes see great success

James Clegg and East athletes do Scotland proud

James Clegg

Scottish Disability Sport would like to pay tribute to the 27 athletes selected for Team GB, all of whom made a significant contribution to the performance of Great Britain as a world force in disability sport.  All performed to the best of their ability at the time, many setting personal bests and some returned with well-earned medals.  Scottish competitors won 11 of 120 GB medals which equates to 9%.  The 27 Scottish athletes competed in 11 sports and medalled in five of those sports.  Congratulations to all GB athletes and players but especially the Scottish contingent.

In particular there were 7 athletes from the East of Scotland, with representatives from all five local authority areas. These athletes include,

Libby Clegg, Athletics, T12

James Clegg, Swimming, S12

Kate Murray, Archery, Re-curve

Sam Ingram, Judo -90kg

Sean Fraser, Swimming, S8

Jim Anderson OBE, Swimming, S2

Blair Glynn, Football, CP7

A special mention must go to the medal winners and in particular James Clegg who secured bronze in the 100m butterfly in his first ever Games.  James was a late addition to the squad and the East Lothian Swim Team athlete didn’t fail to disappoint.  Sister, Libby in her second Paralympics Games won Silver in the 100m sprint and Sam Ingram converted his many hours of training at Ratho into a superb judo silver.

Unbelievably, Jim ‘The Swim’ Anderson OBE from Broxburn competed in his 6th consecutive Paralympic Games.  He couldn’t add to his 17 previous Paralympic medals but managed a 4th place finish in the 50m backstroke.  Jim is outstanding role model and epitomises the word ‘superhuman’ that has been used so much during the greatest Paralympic Games ever!
