3 local curlers head to Canada for the Strathcona cup. A competition over 100 years old.
Congratulations to three of our clubs prominent members, Morgan Nicoll, Graeme Maguire and Dave Munro, who have been selected to be part of a team of sixty curlers going across the Atlantic in January 2013 to play their hosts, Canada, for the Strathcona Cup. The contest is between club curlers from the two countries and will take place over a gruelling three weeks in January. Canada have held the trophy since their win in the Centenary Tour in Scotland in January 2009.
For one club to have three members selected for the tour party is indeed an honour and shows the strength of curling in Haddington.
The first playing of the Strathcona Cup was in 1909 when the Canadians came to Scotland. One writer was astounded to reflect on “the sheer stamina of the Canadians on that tour. They curled; they attended dinners; they worshipped; they travelled the length and breadth of the country; they curled outdoors and they must have drunk the odd glass of whisky while they were there. The die was so inevitably cast for future tours that they may well go on for ever.”
Our Best Wishes will go with Morgan, Graeme and Dave as they prepare to prove the prediction that we Scots are well up to the challenge of taking on the Canadians for the Strathcona Cup once again.
