Gold and Silver at Special Olympics

Lothian Disability Club represented at the recent Special Olympic GB National Games in Sheffield.

Gold and Silver at Special Olympics

Three players from the Lothian Disability Badminton Club, were selected to represent Lothian at the Special Olympic GB National Games held recently at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport. The Club players were Jenny Gray (North Berwick) Michael McCraw (Mayfield) and Daniel Strang (Bathgate) along with a great support from our two experienced Musselburgh Club Coaches Fiona Cameron (Musselburgh) and Colin Leslie (Midlothian) and numerous family members.

Around 2,600 athletes with intellectual disabilities of all ages and classifications came together, with almost 90 of those taking to the badminton court.

The first event was men’s singles where Michael McCraw went to top of the podium taking a gold medal in the Class 1 category while Daniel Strang fought hard and finished just outside the medals in a creditable fourth place in the Class 7 category. McCraw and Strang then teamed up together in the men’s’ doubles Class 1 category where they finished 6th overall.

In the ladies’ singles Jenny Gray finished in 5th place overall in Class 1 category. On the final day Gray teamed up with McCraw where they both celebrated with a silver medal in the mixed doubles prior to the closing ceremony.

Held every four years, the Special Olympics GB National Games represents an opportunity to showcase the abilities of children and adults with intellectual disabilities, allowing them to compete at a national level and experience the personal experience this brings.
