Jenny is Golden Girl!

Lothian Disability Badminton Club achieved some fine results at the recent 4 Nations Para-Badminton Championships in Cardiff winning a total of 6 medals. Twelve club players competed over all the four categories – Learning Disabilities, Wheelchair, Standing and Small Stature and overall the players achieved some fabulous results.

In the Learning Disability events Jenny Gray from North Berwick reached all three finals in ladies singles, ladies doubles and mixed doubles winning 3 gold medals and for the first time ever taking the clean sweep. In the ladies doubles Jenny teamed up with Claire O’Neill and in the mixed she won her third gold with club member Michael McCraw who also won silver in the men’s doubles with his new partner Michael King.

In the LD men’s singles Connell Greenhorn (Bathgate) exceled to reach the final and won a silver medal after a very closely contested match.

In the Wheelchair category Fiona Christie (S. Queensferry) played so well on the Saturday reaching all three finals but unfortunately had a bad fall resulting with her having to withdraw from the final the following day.

In the SL3 standing men’s singles Alan Oliver won silver after playing some fine badminton but losing out on the gold to world number one Darren Bethell (England). Colin Leslie (Midlothian) also reached the semi- final stages where he lost out to club mate Alan Oliver.

In the SL3/4 doubles Colin Leslie and Dave Purdie teamed up together for the first time and had some very close matches including taking a set off the eventual winners. Alan Oliver teamed up with English player and regular partner Anthony Forster to reach the quarter final stages.

The SS6 (small stature) category saw Ross Foley and Bobby Laing up against some very strong opposition but both boys competed well throughout the competition.

Congratulations to all twelve players for their performances throughout the tournament and returning back to Scotland with another medal haul of 3 gold and 3 silver medals.
