Success for East Lothian players
East Lothian badminton players certainly set the feathers flying at the Lothian School’s Badminton Championships at Penicuik Centre with the U12 winners Gregor Ronan (Dunbar Primary) Lois Turnbull (Law Primary) and Euan Campbell (Dunbar Primary) displaying their trophies in photo above.
In the U12 event our young players showed how much they had improved this season by taking home four out of five titles. In the Boys’ Singles three of our boys Euan Campbell, Gregor Ronan, both Dunbar Primary, and U11 year-old Andrew Morgan from Longniddry Primary toppled their pools and progressed to battle for top honours in the final knock-out stages where Gregor Ronan beat Andrew Morgan 21/19 in the semi-final and then took doubles partner and friend Euan Campbell 21/15 in the final to win the Gold Medal.
Under 11 year-old Lewis Robertson, Longniddry Primary, finished a close 2nd in his pool and went on to win the ‘B’ Medal.
Gregor added a second gold to his collection when he and Euan joined forces in the Boys’ Doubles and topped the pool by winning all their games to take the title.
Euan returned to the court partnering U11 year-old Lois Turnbull from Law Primary while Gregor played with Jennifer Menzies from Edinburgh in the Mixed Doubles Pool. All the games were very hard fought and really close with Euan and Lois finishing in first place and Gregor and Jennifer in 3rd position.
While the boys battled on their courts Lois was competing exceedingly well in the girls’ Singles where she took 2nd place on a points count back to Zazou Wycherley (George Watsons).
Lois took her 2nd Gold of the afternoon when she teamed up with Catherine Holland (Edinburgh) to win all her girl’ doubles matches.
Our older players also took the place by storm when they played in the Lothian U16 events.
In the Boys’ Singles Ewan Mathieson, Aberlady, and James Morgan, Longniddry, who are both U15, progressed to the top pool from the knock-out games. James finished in 2nd place to Edinburgh’s David Kong while Ewan finished in 5th position.
Joining forces in the Boys’ Doubles Ewan and James really put on great performances and coped successfully with all the challenges to take the U16 Doubles title and winners cups.
Meanwhile our girls were battling it out in their events where Sarah Brogan, Longniddry, took top honours when she beat Laura Moos, also Longniddry, 21/19 in the Girls’ Singles and then partnered Eloise Morris, Longniddry to lift the Girls’ Doubles Title.
Laura got her revenge , in the Mixed Doubles , as she and Lorne Russell, Edinburgh, won their first ever title together when they pushed top seeds Eloise and David Kong , Edinburgh, into 2nd place and Ewan Mathieson and Jyoti Arbuckle, North Berwick finished in 3rd place.
A most successful and challenging week end for all our East Lothian players who are going from strength to strength and gaining in confidence as they win more and more of those close encounters.
