Ross High/Portobello U18’s Win Portobello Sevens
11th April’15 saw Portobello Rugby Club host their seven aside tournament at Cavalry Park, Duddingston. Amongst the competitors were a number of East Lothian teams – Haddington/Preston Lodge, Dunbar and Ross High; who at U18 level play alongside the hosts.
Tournament was organized on a round robin format with the winners being the team with the best record.
Ross High/Portobello had two sides in the competition – an A side of the older lads and a younger B side.
The ties were all played in fine spirit on a variable spring day.
The tournament was won by Ross High/Portobello “A” side, who won all their games. Dunbar finished as runners up, winning two games.
The final scores didn’t reflect the tightness of the games, with a number of the victories coming through strong second half performances.
Notably, Dunbar provided stiff opposition in their first game. Victories
over Haddington/Preston Lodge and Livingston set up a final game decider with the “B” team, who had earlier beaten Livingston and Haddington /Preston Lodge.
The younger lads put up a spirited display, particularly in the first half when Ross High’s Lewis Edmond ran in two long range tries. However the strength of the older lads shone through and another strong second half performance made for a convincing victory.
The squad of players all made significant contributions, with tries spread throughout the side. Top scorer was utility player Adam Welsh, who successfully played in a number of roles as injuries took their toll during the day.
Ross High players involved in the tournament were;
“A side” – Adam Welsh(c), Jack Walsh, Blair Patterson, Josh Milne.
“B side” – Lewis Edmond, Connor Lillie, Sham Singh, Glen Shields.
