Edinburgh’s Seamus Russell and Glasgow’s Alice Campbell
wereboth singles winners at the recent U12 East Lothian Open
Badminton Championships held at Meadowmill Sports Centre.
In the boys singles top seed Michael Farnood (Edinburgh) lost out at the quarter final stage 26/24 after a nail biting match to Alexander McGarrie (Blantyre). McGarrie’s next round opponent was local East Lothian player Alastair Campbell (Dunbar) who played a superb match to win a tough semi-final 21/19. In the final Campbell was up against Seamus Russell who was too strong and consistent winning the title 21/15.
Russell also reached the Boys Doubles final with Calvin Chan (Glasgow) but just lost out to a more established partnership of Michael Farnood and Colin Taylor (Hamilton) 21/15.
In the girls singles top seed Kiera Waddell (Duns) was beaten at the semi-final stage by Alice Campbell 21/14 who then went on to win the title 21/15 against Linlithgow’s Naomi Branford.
In the girls doubles Naomi Bradford and Kiera Waddell teamed up together and dominated the event winning the final 21/13 against Alice Campbell and Erin Waddell (Giffnock).
