The Falcons U15’s ‘Green’ and ‘White’ teams recently played against their Borders counterparts in four very tough fixtures as part of the selection process for the Borders/East Lothian Regional Academy U16 squad that will represent the region in the summer. The first two fixtures took place up at Meadowmill and the Borders sides proved too strong for both the East Lothian teams, winning both games convincingly. The games were physical and the step up in intensity was a steep learning curve for the Falcons players. In the return fixtures the following week down in Duns, the East Lothian team responded well. Although the ‘Green’ team lost again, they put in a brave performance and never gave up throughout the contest. The Falcons ‘White’ team showed signs of big improvement leading up to the game and managed to put in a much improved performance and get a sold win against the Borders team. The victory was built on solid defence and then taking their chances when they got in position to score points.

Overall, it was very good to see so many East Lothian players getting the opportunity to play District Rugby with more than 50 East Lothian players getting game time. It was also noticeable how many U14 aged players were involved which bodes well for next year as they will learn from this experience and develop further for next year. There is some exciting young talent coming through in the Borders and East Lothian and this should make for exciting times ahead for rugby in the region.
