Pupils Jump for Gymnastics

Gymnastics makes it's first leap into the primary curriculum in East Lothian

Schools gymnastics

On Thursday 7th October the nursery class at Pinkie St Peters took part in the first class of a six week block of gymnastics as part of the new initiative supported by enjoyleisure and East Lothian Council. The new programme sees pupils in a number of schools taking part in a six week block of lessons as an introduction to gymnastics.

The programme, developed by enjoyleisure and East Lothian Council sees pupils in the early years phase of education take part in six weeks of learning of the fundamentals of gymnastics including jumping, balance and rolling. Each week consists of a different focus for the lesson yet allows pupils to move through the skills and stations at their own pace. The format of the programme allows teachers to mix and match skills depending on the progressions of the pupils.

With the support from Marion Barclay, PE Lead Officer for East Lothian Council, the programme aligns with the curriculum of excellence making it sustainable as a practical resource for all schools moving forward. The resource includes session plans and key learning points to provide teachers with the tools to create realistic and successful lessons.

With the support of enjoyleisure, lessons are being lead by gymnastics and pre-school coach Pamela Marr, who uses her knowledge to guide both teachers and pupils into the programme and provide help and support where necessary. Having completed the first six week block at Pinkie St Peters, Pamela has now moved on to Stoneyhill Primary School where she is working with nursey, P1 and P2, with two more schools scheduled for the new year.

More information about gymnastics can be found on the enjoyleisure website.
