Tennis recognised at East Lothian Celebrating Sport Awards

The East Lothian Celebrating Sport awards took place on the 28th of September at the Brunton Hall, with tennis being represented in the Disability, volunteer and young sportsperson categories.

Luke Turnbull was rewarded for his continued success by winning the Sportsperson with a disability award. Luke, who is on Tennis Foundation learning difficulty performance programme, travelled as part of Team GB to the INAS (International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability) World Tennis Championships where he won 2 Bronze medals and 1 Silver. Domestically he has also enjoyed huge success, reaching a ranking of number 4 in Scotland for U14. He was the 2017 Senior North Berwick Club champion (Singles and Doubles), Part of the U14 & U16 East of Scotland Division 1 winning teams with Edinburgh Club St Serfs and the Winner of grade 3 doubles event in Liverpool. A great achievement for Luke who certainly has a very bright future ahead of him.

Although they didn’t win awards, it was great to see Iain Miller and Max McVey nominated in the Volunteer and Young Sportsperson categories respectively and a huge achievement. Iain, has just completed his 20th year as Tournament Director of the East Lothian Open Tennis Tournament where He has overseen growth from 130 people in 1998 to over 500 participants in 2017. Although he moved to London over 15 years ago he has remained a committed and dedicated volunteer putting in many hours in delivering the ELO Tennis tournament each year. Max has enjoyed continued success with the highlights being selected for the under 9 and 10 Scotland teams over the last 2 years as well as competing for Scotland against English Counties and Wales over the past 12 months. Max is someone I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more of in the future.

Competition was fierce in all categories so a huge well done goes to Luke, Iain and Max along with all the other nominees across the other sports.
